In 2016 SPA initiated a project to provide a comprehensive framework for the future development of a collection of significant cultural and historical sites located just 2 miles from downtown Knoxville defined as the Battlefield Loop. Working with consultant PORT Urbanism the team completed a study which suggested connections between a number of isolated sites by expanding the boundaries of the Loop to incorporate a number of relics of Knoxville’s industrial past which tell an important story of Knoxville’s early role as a manufacturing leader in the post-civil war New South. The first construction project within the Battlefield Loop will focus on the under-utilized historic and recreational assets at Augusta Quarry, a decommissioned limestone quarry located at the base of the historic Civil War site of Fort Dickerson. The quarry, which was abandoned in the 1970’s, is now a crystal-blue swimming hole and a summertime staple in Knoxville. This project brings some long-awaited recreational amenities to the park including a comfort station and vendor kiosk, a series of intimate “quarry rooms” around the perimeter of the lake, and a new beach, ramp, and boardwalk with integrated kayak and canoe storage.
