Balter Beerworks*

The owners of a new startup brewery approached the architects with the simple idea to serve the local and expanding craft beer market in Knoxville, TN that sought to separate themselves by serving high quality food offerings as well excellent craft beer. The brewery location at the existing vacant automobile service center was obvious to the clients, however the extremely tight and topographically challenged site created the backdrop for a dramatic new gateway into Downtown Knoxville. These challenges lead the team to be formed around a veteran group of food service and brewery consultants made up of two architectural teams, one local and one from Boulder, Colorado, engineering consultants, and dedicated brewery and restaurant equipment consultants that created the team to navigate what would become an adaptive reuse project with an addition of a kitchen and restrooms along with a new freestanding building component that would house the brewery equipment itself nestled beneath the existing sweeping service canopy. The interior of the building consisted of an industrial palette that was celebrated within while complimenting it with a new exterior Corten rustwall panel system and a custom raw steel storefront system. Custom furniture was designed and installed by the team themselves with the same aesthetic and spirit as the building itself.
